On April 2, 2000, Cartoon Network decided to revamp the
idea of showing cartoon shorts with a new all-request show, titled JBVO.
The already famous Johnny Bravo was brought in to host the show. Akin
to MTV's "Total Request Live," fans could write, call, or
e-mail Johnny with the cartoons they wanted to see every Sunday night.
The choices ranged from classic Looney Tunes to any of the Cartoon
Cartoons. The miracle of technology even made it possible for the
program to run live. The animation of Johnny matched with the spoken conversations
he had with the guests on the show, giving a real sense of a live
request.
Since Johnny is a little dense, he would often get help
from his off-screen producer, Graig Gordon, who seemed to be running the
entire show himself. Although it was Johnny's
charm and wit that drove the ladies crazy, and it was the cartoons that
made people watch. The show even became popular enough to grant it it's
own JBVO Weekend that aired requested cartoons by the fans. The program
lasted a year until it was pulled from the schedule in 2001.
As
a special treat, we have the very first "thank you" letter
written in to the very first caller on JBVO in 2001. It was Allyson from
New Jersey, and she requested The Powerpuff Girls short, "Buttercrush".
Johnny Bravo even sent
her this letter after it aired.
