The Fairly OddParents

This year, The Fairly OddParents is celebrating its 10th anniversary on the air. The series premiered on Friday, March 30, 2001 at 8:30pm on Nickelodeon.

Nick will celebrate Fairly OddParents’ 10 years on air with the live-action TV movie, A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner! premiering Saturday, July 9 at 8pm ET/PT.

Here are some fun facts about OddParents you may or may not know (via Nick press release):

  • Timmy wears a pink hat because creator and executive producer Butch Hartman’s blue marker ran out of ink while designing the character.
  • Originally, Butch Hartman was going to name the lead character after his brother Mike, but due to an argument, Hartman named the pint-sized protagonist after one of his other brothers: Timmy.
  • Recurring voice guest-stars include Jay Leno (The Tonight Show with Jay Leno) as the Crimson Chin, Adam West (Batman) as Catman and Norm McDonald (Saturday Night Live, The Norm Show) as Norm the Genie. Other celebrity guest voice stars have included Alec Baldwin, Frankie Muniz, Ben Stein, Gilbert Gottfried, Dana Carvey, Brendan Fraser, Tom Arnold, Jackie Mason, Julie Chen, Scott Hamilton, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley.
  • Wanda’s design, especially her hair, was inspired by Wilma Flintstone from the classic 1960s animated series The Flintstones.
  • To date, Nickelodeon has ordered 126 The Fairly OddParents episodes, which include 12 TV specials and nine animated TV movies.
  • The Fairly OddParents is the third longest-running Nicktoon, behind SpongeBob SquarePants and Rugrats.
  • The character of Mr. Crocker, who desperately tries to uncover Timmy’s fairies in the series, was inspired by Walter Kornbluth, Eugene Levy’s character from the 1984 feature film Splash, who tried to prove the existence of mermaids.
  • Timmy’s parents were originally designed without heads because Hartman never intended to show their faces.
  • Creator and executive producer Butch Hartman voices the character of Dr. Rip Studwell, a handsome fairy doctor who knows how very handsome he is!
  • The Fairly OddParents has consistently ranked among Nickelodeon’s top programs since the show’s premiere on March 30, 2001.
  • In 2008, The Fairly OddParents’ “Fairly OddBaby” special drew the biggest audience ever for the series – 9.1 million total viewers. Only the Super Bowl drew more kid viewers than “Fairly OddBaby” for the year.
  • The Fairly OddParents is seen in 113 countries and territories in 27 languages around the world.
